Help I’m Alive (Daytrotter Session)

Back at SXSW last March, long before 14 year-old, vampire-obsessed girls were humming their music because it was featured prominently in the newest “Twilight” movie, Emily Haines and the guys from Metric got together with the Daytrotter crew and did a quickie session of two acoustic tracks from last years album “Fantasies”‘Gimme Sympathy’, which I’ve featured twice on The List (acoustic back in January and the album version last year) and today’s song, a beautiful version of ‘Help I’m Alive’. My only question is why did it take Daytrotter so long to get this out? Here’s the album cut so you can hear the contrast…

Now if you haven’t already bookmarked Daytrotter, this cut should convince you what a great music resource it has become. As much as I love the album version of this song, hearing Emily’s vocal striped away from the slick layers of production makes for a new experience and I gotta say, I am truly moved. So do yourself a favor and hook up with Daytrotter at http://www.daytrotter.com and then go make friends with Metric on their MySpace Page and over at ilovemetric.com

Gimme Sympathy – Acoustic

I’ve gotten a lotta e-mails in the past few days regarding this years Songs of the Year, but the runaway majority had to do with Metric’s ‘Gimme Sympathy’. And surprisingly (especially since I regularly get slammed for serving up too much ‘soft’ music) a bunch of you went back to the original post last August and watched the YouTube video of the acoustic version…and then asked if I had an mp3 of that one, too! Well…of course I do…and I’m just here to make you guys happy, right?!! As good as Emily Haines is in the album version, when her vocal is striped down and just a simple guitar is backing her up, all the sadness and hurt comes out and you really see just how great this song is. ‘Gimme Sympathy’ is off of Metric’s latest album, Fantasies. You should all make friends on their MySpace page

If you’ve been paying any attention to the way the Song of the Day operates, then you probably know I find a lotta new music from listening to some of my fave channels on the old Sirius…Alt Nation, Underground Garage, Sirius/XM U (the indie channel)…but I also frequent one terrestrial radio station that after all this time still pushes out great new music on a regular basis…Fordham University’s WFUV. New York radio has pretty much sucked the entire time I’ve lived here, but FUV has been the one welcome exception. I was listening yesterday when this new cut from Metric’s latest album, Fantasies, came on…I got so wrapped up in the hook-filled piece of synth-pop that I didn’t even realize I was listening to a heart-wrenching breakup song until I came home, downloaded it and listened a few more times. Emily Haines’ raspy vocal blends in beautifully with the dreamy synths and fuzzy guitars. But hey, I understand if you’ve had your fill of electro-synth and you wanna just listen to some great songwriting…that’s cool…then check out the stripped-down acoustic version on YouTube…

And then head over to their MySpace page and listen to a bit more and if you wanna stream WFUV, click here!
